A Diverse Highland Heritage
Tanzania is home to a diverse range of mountains beyond Kilimanjaro, each offering unique landscapes and experiences. The Ngorongoro Highlands, with their chain of extinct volcanic peaks and lush forests, form part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and are rich in wildlife, scenic craters like Empakaai and Olmoti, and deep-rooted Maasai culture.
Rising dramatically from the Rift Valley floor, Ol Doinyo Lengai—revered by the Maasai as the “Mountain of God”—is an active volcano known for its rare natrocarbonatite lava and challenging night treks to its summit. Further east, the ancient Eastern Arc Mountains, including the Uluguru, Usambara, and Udzungwa ranges, are biodiversity hotspots often dubbed the “Galápagos of Africa,” home to endemic species, hidden waterfalls, and pristine montane forests ideal for nature lovers and birdwatchers.
