Overview
Oldonyo Lengai is Masai word that means the sacred Mountain of God. Is an active volcano raised to 2962m asl located 240 kilometer from Arusha town in the rift valley south of Lake Natron, is the breeding site and one of the important site for endangered lesser flamingos.
The mountain is the part of volcanic system of the East African Rift Valley and is one of the few volcanos without sodium carbonate and potassium and the lava has only silicon, it is uniquely produces Natrocarbonatite lava. Natrocarbonatite lava looks like black oil and it turn white in contact with fall of moisture.
The last bigger eruptions was in 1966, with some smaller one in 1983 and 2007
It takes up to 6 hours to climb from its base to the top and most climbs are organized after midnight to arrive at the summit in the sunrise. On the summit the hiker can enjoy the view of mount Lengai smoky crater, lake Natron and majestic mount Kilimanjaro.
The visit to Oldonyo lengai can include different activities like tour to Lake Natron (Lake shore), Engaresero waterfalls for swimming in the natural swimming pool and visiting Maasai villages and homes and can take from 2 – 3 days or more depending on the time of the tourist(s).
