Eastern Arc Mountains
Overview
The Eastern Arc is a chain of ancient mountains in Tanzania and part of Kenya. The mountain chain is a series of isolated mountains, which have been heavily covered by forests. Much of the original forests, especially at the more accessible or lower elevations, have been converted for agricultural crops. These mountains are recognized as one of 24 globally important “hot spots” for forest biodiversity according to Conservation International Scientists believe that the forest has survived on the Eastern Arc Mountains for over 30 million years, and were once connected to the forests of the Congo Basin and West Africa.
Neighboring mountains are much younger, for example Kilimanjaro is estimated to be about 1-2 million years old.
The forests and mountains of the Eastern Arc provide an attraction to visiting tourists. Current tourist locations include day hike or 2 – 3 days to the South Pare Mountains – Shengena peak 2,463 m, Udzungwa Mountains National Park, Amani Nature Reserve in the East Usambaras, Lushoto in the West Usambaras and the area above Morogoro region in the Uluguru Mountains 2,630 m.
