Climbing Overview
Mount Meru is dormant stratovolcano Mountain, is the second highest Mountain in Tanzania and fifth highest Mountain in Africa, is considered as Mount Kilimanjaro little brother and is regarded as the best acclimatization or warm up prior to mount Kilimanjaro climbing.
It is located in Arusha National Nark one of the best Tanzania wildlife area, this prime location provide a chance for hikers to spot some animals like giraffes, elephants, zebras, buffalos, different types of antelopes, baboons, monkeys, warthogs and different types of birds which inhabits the area, while on the way to the mountain so climbers are accompanied with guides, porters, cook and armed park ranger for the safety during the trip. And is in this area where the famous 50s “HATARI MOVIE” was filmed in the area by Hardy Kruger and John Wayne.
It is raised to 4566m asl with three major peaks which are big Meru (Socialist Peak) 4566m, Little Meru 3820 and Meru Crater 3666. Hikers can spend 3 – 4 days up and down and spend nights in mountain huts furnished with showers, flushing toiled, dinning hall with chairs and tables, kitchen and solar power within the compound.
Mount Meru can be climbed throught the year except in April, May and November which are rainy season.
Full Itinerary
Momela Gate
After breakfast drive to Momela Gate located inside the park Arusha Park. From Momela Gate 1500m begin climbing adventure of almost 3 hours to reach the first camp Miriakamba Hut 2500m for dinner and overnight.
Miriakamba Hut
After breakfast leave Miriakamba Hut and proceed climbing for almost 4 hours to reach Saddle Hut 3500m for dinner and overnight.
Upon arrival enjoy relaxation before late afternoon short climbing (taking approximately 40 minutes) to reach Little Meru peak standing 3820m above sea level. Then after a short trek to Little Meru then return to Saddle Hut for dinner and overnight.
Saddle hut
Around midnight begins ascending from Saddle hut crossing rhino point with alpine desert vegetation to reach highest peak of Meru the Socialist peak 4565m. After conquering Meru peak descend to Saddle Hut for breakfast the after descend to Momela gate then transfer back to Arusha.
