Overview
Shira peak is the oldest peak of Mount Kilimanjaro raised to 3962m asl. The first eruption was at Shira, followed by Mawenzi 5149m asl and finally Kibo where the highest point is Uhuru 5895m asl. The hike takes to the view of shira plateau, stunning view of Kibo and finally to Shira cathedral. Shira plateau shows the remains of an ancient caldera, a volcanic crater that expired around half million years ago and is one of the world heritage sites.
The tour starts early in the morning at your hotel and drive to the western side of the mountain in which you will drive through the rich agriculture area at the base of mountain, then to plantation forest up to Londorosi gate at 2250m asl. After all registrations and park formalities the drive starts moving steadily up through indigenous montane rain forest, home of variety of animals and birdlife, with the help of the guide, ranger and driver you can spot different types of wildlife like colobus monkey, blue monkeys, velvet monkey, different types of birds like crested turacos, hornbill, alpine chatand animal footprints and droppings of elephants, elands, buffalo and lion as these western regions are known frequented visited by big game from Kenya’s Ambosel national park which neighbors Kilimanjaro National Park and is less visited side of the mountain.
The drive ends to Murum barrier at 3400m asl where the hike starts.From this point at the edge of the plateau the hike can be any direction, following the myriad of small animal tracks to meander the way across the plateau to shira cathedral 3872m/12703ft asl.
Attractions features;
Shira plateau and its unique vegetation’s, stunning view of Kibo with northern glacier, Tanzanian mountain stunning wilderness, vast plains of neighboring Amboseli national park in Kenya, deep gorge of the simba river and untouched landscape. Most animals found in the area are nocturnal with few diurnals.
Personal gear needed in this hike are
- Day pack to carry water, lunch box, warm clothes, full waterproofs, stout walking boots, sun cream, sun glass, sun hut or casket, passport and camera.
In the late afternoon or evening hikers walk back to Morum Barrier gate, where the vehicle will be waiting to transfer back to the hotel.
