Climbing Overview

Trekking/hiking to Ngorongoro highlands takes you through diverse landscape of the Ngorongoro crater highlands, hiking is through the grassy plains and mountainous countryside, thick mountain forest and Savannah landscape of the rift valley. On this journey is usual to see wild animals and insight into the daily routine of the Masai people.

Full Itinerary

Arusha – Olmot Crater

You will be picked up in your hotel in the morning and drive to Ngorongoro Conservation Area gate for registrations formalities, tourists information, general tours briefing and drive to scenic crater road to Masai village of Nainokanoka 2650m asl for overnight and visit of waterfalls and Olmot crater in the afternoon.

Nainokanoka – Bulati

 In this day you will be have Masai guide throughout your journey with the help of donkey to carry all the stuff to Bulati village. The hike pass through traditional masai bomas and cattle heads with wild animals like gazelles, zebra and wildebeest with hungry jackals and eagles around  on the way.

  • Walking time 4 – 5 hours

Bulati – Empakaai Crater

After breakfast, the journey goes up to hill  with panoramic view of the grass plains below. The trek continues up and down through bush landscape which finally opens up to the active volcano of Oldonyo Lengai and Empakaai crater alkaline soda lake which is an important food source for flamingos. The journey continues before reaching the campsite for the night.

Empakaai Crater – Accacia Camp

The day starts by hiking to the Masai village of Naiyobi, you can have the view of Oldonyo Lengai and active volcano from a distance, overnight at Acacia forest camp.

  • Distance – 13 km
  • Walking time 4 – 5 hours

Accacia Camp – Engaresero – Arusha

The journey ends up downhill with the view of Oldonyo Lengai, Lake Natron and the Great Rift Valley.  The rugged countryside looks almost surreal covered by grey ash of the last eruption in 2007. You can extend a day for a climb to Oldonyo Lengai – Active volcano or  tour drive can be organized to Lake Natron – World important breeding site for lesser flamingos and Engaresero waterfall before driving back to Arusha via Engaruka historical site.
